Istria
the Coastal Region

At the heart of the Croatian wine world, Istria shines as an icon of craftsmanship and tradition. Istria and sub-region Kvarner, are the northernmost part of the Croatian coast. This region consists of two subregions: the Istrian peninsula and the Hrvatsko Primorje (Kvarner) – also known as the Croatian coastal area. Here, where the sun, the coast and rolling vineyards meet, wines are born that are the flag bearers of Croatian wine production. Istria is not just a wine region; it is a living heritage, a custodian of centuries-old techniques and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.
What makes Istria truly unique is its unparalleled diversity. Not only in its landscapes, but also in the wines themselves. Every bottle carries the essence of the terroir – a harmony of soil, climate and the dedicated hands that tend the vines. Here, tradition and innovation merge, resulting in wines that are both authentic and progressive. The white wines from Istria and Kvarner are characterized by a refined balance: from light-medium to rich-medium body, always elegant and refreshing. The red wines from these regions are mostly medium-bodied, but with some powerful, full-bodied varieties of top quality, they offer a harmonious interplay of fruity depth and lively acidity. You will often encounter cuvées in Istria, these wines are the result of a thoughtful and creative approach to winemaking, where respect for the authentic and innovation go hand in hand.

The grape varieties of Istria
In Istria, one white grape shines like no other: Malvazija Istarska (Malvasia Istriana). This native variety is loved throughout the country and is even the second most widely planted white grape in Croatia. Its fresh, aromatic character makes it a favorite among wine lovers! In addition to Malvazija Istarska, other white grapes that are successfully grown include Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Moscato and the unique Muškat Momjanski (Moscato di Momiano). Red wines also have a prominent place in Istria. The powerful, authentic Teran is an icon of the region, while Merlot, Borgonja (Blaufränkisch), Cabernet Sauvignon and Refošk (Refosco) offer a full, refined experience.
In the subregion Hrvatsko Primorje, the elegant white Žlahtina is the star, together with Malvazija Istarska, Trbljan and Maraština. The Red Plavina is a type worth mentioning, but Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Plavac Mali can also be found there.
The Gulf of Kvarner has many islands and on and especially on the island of Pag, the white Gegić grape can be found.

According to wine expert Mr. Stephen Spurrier, Malvasija Istarska is a grape that is characterized by a balance of freshness, fruit tones, a great texture. A wine that is very beautiful in its youth but has the potential to become complex after a few years of maturation. This grape is a wine from the old world and European, in the coming years this grape will get a passport to reach the whole world.
